Author Guidelines

The editors invite contributions to the journal. Authors will not be charged any fees for publication in the journal.

Articles should meet the standards of original scholarly research, and will be anonymized and reviewed through a double blind peer review process. Essays will also be reviewed by one editor.

Articles can have a maximum length of 7,000 words. In addition, authors must submit an abstract with a length of a maximum of 300 words.

All contributions must be submitted as editable electronic text documents, preferably one document per contribution, including tables, etc. They will be post processed according to our layout standards, and converted to PDF and EPUB prior to publication. All submitted manuscripts will be scanned for plagiarism. All scans will be done as “private scans”, i.e. no copies of submitted manuscripts will be saved on any plagiarism database.

In order to complete the review process, papers should be submitted at least three months before publication of the next issue, see Focus and scope.

General guidelines

  • Manuscripts are accepted in English, with British English spellings and punctuation preferred. Please use single quotation marks, except where ‘a quotation is “within” a quotation’. Long quotations of 40 words or more should be indented without quotation marks.
  • A typical manuscript is not to exceed 7,000 words, including tables, references, captions, footnotes and endnotes. Manuscripts that greatly exceed this will be critically reviewed with respect to length and authors should include a word count with their manuscript.
  • Manuscripts should be double spaced, with ample margins of at least one inch, and the approximate number of words should be stated.
  • Authors should send both an anonymous paper and a cover page. The cover page should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. One author should be identified as the corresponding author, and all persons who have a reasonable claim to authorship must be named in the manuscript as co-authors; the corresponding author must be authorized by all co-authors to act as an agent on their behalf in all matters pertaining to publication of the manuscript, and the order of names should be agreed upon by all authors.
  • Please give the affiliation where the research was conducted.
  • Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page, abstract, keywords, main text, references, appendices (as appropriate), table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages) and figure caption(s) (as a list). An abstract of not more than 300 words is required for all submitted manuscripts.
  • Each manuscript should have at least three to six keywords. In addition, it is preferable to provide the manuscript with specific keywords concerning:
    - Academic discipline
    - Subject
    - Geo-spatial coverage
    - Chronological or historical coverage
    -Type, method or approach
  • Section headings should be concise.
  • Authors are encouraged to consider articles to be published in the JCSW when writing their manuscript.
  • Notes and references should be written according to the APA 6th edition style and notes must be included in the text. For more information visit the official APA page or the Citation Compass.
  • The author, when resubmitting one revised article after the peer reviews, shall mark the revisions that have been done, by colouring the revised texts. The author shall also account for these revisions in relation to the reviews.
